Comment
Es geht um einen mathematischen Kontext. Ich glaube, beide Varianten ("be" und "is") schon gelesen zu haben. Welche ist besser?

Vielen Dank und schönen Abend.

Comment ... das seh ich so:We assume X to be a positive number.oderWe assume that X is a positive number.... ? . . .
Comment I agree with Daddy. The second version is more common ("that" is optional); the first sounds gehoben.
Comment Not subjunctive, because it's not about a subjective perspective. The readers, the 'we' of the subject, don't care whether X is a positive number; they're just examining that case objectively, as one possibility among others. We assume that x is a positive number.(The suggestion in #1, 'We assume X to be ...,' is more formal/traditional; not wrong, but probably unnecessary.)The assumption that x is a positive number implies that ...In contrast, sentences expressing a subjective opinion do take the subjunctive:It is important that math teachers be positive when discussing students' grades. It is essential that budget cuts not affect junior faculty and staff disproportionately compared to senior faculty and football coaches. Also, what you may remember having seen is a different formulation typical of traditional mathematical proofs:Let X be a positive number.I think that's what might be in the subjunctive in romance languages such as Spanish, but that's just a guess, I haven't ever done math in Spanish. (-:
Comment Beides ist richtig."We assume that x be a positive number" ist Konjuktiv. Wir nehmen an x sei eine positive Nummer"We assume that x is a positive number" ist Indikativ. Wir nehmen an x ist eine positive Nummer.
Comment Ich benutze häufiger "assume that x is a positive number", wenn das für sich steht.Wenn das die Einführung von "x" ist, dann ist "let x be a positive number" mindestens genauso üblich. In späteren Verweisen würde ich durchaus auch schreiben:"recall that we assumed x to be a positive number".Oder auch "Throughout this paper, we assume x to be a positive number."Den Satz "Assume x be a positive number" würde ich als falsch einstufen.
Comment re #4: No, subjunctive is NOT right. It might have been right in the 16th century, but it is not right now. Please don't confuse the issue.
Comment Den Satz "Assume x be a positive number" würde ich als falsch einstufen.Ich auch.
