This site has a good explanation of Ludo, Trouble, Sorry! and Parcheesi - with links to descriptions and pictures of each board for comparison.
    http://www.boardgamecentral.com/games/parchee...

When I was young, I played Trouble and Sorry! in the US. However, I think that Parcheesi is probably the more widespread, older, well-known game. Ludo appears to be the British variation.

Und Parcheesi - Par wie in Parched, Chees wie in "Cheese", and "i" wie die letzte silbe in "catastrophe", oder wie in Lorelei?

We in the UK called it Ludo. As in Loo-Dough, yes.

svaihingen: Actually, growing up in the US, I knew Sorry! before I discovered Parcheesi, so I'm not sure that's true.

"Parcheesi, a family classic since the 1860s, is the ultimate race-and-chase board game."

"Since 1934, players of all ages have been chasing one another around the classic gameboard, trying to get their own four pawns from Start to Home."

Well, it's true that Parcheesi is older. I too discovered Sorry and Trouble first - but over time have come to the conclusion that Parcheesi is a more widespread and recognizable board game than either Trouble or Sorry - and would recommend it as a translation over either Trouble or Sorry - as Parcheesi is unambiguously a board game - and the words trouble and sorry have other, more common senses and uses.

I may be wrong about which is better known nowadays, but that doesn't change my recommendation.

I agree - though "Loo-Dough" is presumably just your phonetic rendering, which I also agree with, but not an alternative spelling, right? I've only ever seen the spelling "Ludo".

@kinky afro. Phonetics (after a fashion), as asked for, not alternative spelling!

Yes - sorry 'bout that: I evidently didn't read #3 yesterday!
