    His father very early on conveyed the utilitarian fundamentals to him.

    Das klingt für mich noch sehr deutsch. Hat jemand eine Idee, wie man das besser formulieren könnte?

    #4: Ja, auf jeden Fall 'taught' (starkes Verb), so habe ich es in der Schule gelernt und das ist auch weiterhin richtig. 'taught' ist allenfalls Slang und nicht nachzuahmen.

    or if you prefer:
    "He learned the utilitarian fundamentals from his father at an early age." - fits "vermittelt" maybe better.
