No, that's the word and it's quite colloquial. If you want to describe what it is, say "inflammation of the bladder", but there's no need to.

so you could (if needed) define it as
a bladder infection
or
inflammation of the bladder

They also call it "infection of the urinary tract"

But "urinary tract infection" covers all infections of the urinary tract - the kidneys, ureters, bladder and urethra. A "Blasenentzündung" is one type of UTI and so if you want to be more specific (which I agree is often not the case, and people will just say they have a urinary tract infection) you have to say "bladder infection/inflammation of the bladder" or "cystitis".

And I think you will find a lot of people do know what cystitis is - especially women who suffer from it!

Als ich in England gelebt habe, war ich des öfteren wegen "cystitis" beim Arzt. Da ist das Wort absolut gebräuchlich.

In England ist nach meiner Erfahrung cystitis sehr wohl gebrauechlich und auch gelaeufig. Es gibt ja sogar in jedem Boots rezeptfrei so "cystitis relief" Puelverchen.

I'm an American, and among all my American friends, this is generally just called a bladder infection. Cystitis sounds too 'medical'! As already mentioned, UTI is also quite common but an even broader category of ailments.

Ich bin mit 'bladder infection / infection of the bladder' in UK immer gut verstanden worden. (Und ich musste es leider häufig sagen.) Beim Arzt, der das natürlich auch versteht, war jedoch 'cystitis' eher angebracht. Dieser hat wiederum dann meist 'urinary tract infection' verwendet, da sich, wie Marianne in #5 gut erklärt hat, die Infektion meistens ausgebreitet hatte.

Kommt also ganz darauf an, wo man den Begriff verwendet.
