'sorry' klingt mir sehr nach 'es tut mir leid', 'i'm sorry that i broke your favorite cup', anstelle von 'ich finde es schade' ohne sich dabei selbst zu entschuldigen. gibt es da noch alternativen?

ginge z.B., aber #1 ist besser. 'Sorry' in diesem Kontext hat nichts mit Schuldgefühlen zu tun; du sagst ja auch z.B. 'I'm so sorry', wenn dir jemand sagt, dass seine Mutter gestorben ist.

A: I'm sorry but I can't make it to your party.
B: Oh no, I'm so sorry to hear that, I wish you could be there!

Athyri, "sorry" heißt eigentlich so etwas wie "betrübt". Die Entschuldigung ist also eine abgeleitete Verwendung. Hilft das?

Wenn dir das zu viel 'sorry' ist (obwohl der Dialog durchaus idiomatisch klingt), kannst du etwas antworten wie:

Oh, what a shame! I was really looking forward to you coming.

It's a shame you won't be making it to my party.

Als Antwort auf "I'm sorry but I can't make it to your party."?

I'd go with, "It's too bad you can't come to my birthday party!" It is close to the meaning of Schade without using the slightly outdated/more formal "pity" or "shame." Presuming of course this is a casual party.

#1 is the most idiomatic, whether you like it or not.

'What a shame' or 'What a pity' both sound rather old-fashioned, though they're still correct.

'(It's) too bad' is more casual, so it can sound dismissive and insincere, like 'Tough luck':

Too bad you can't come to the party, but we're going to have a great time whether you're there or not!

or even upset or sarcastic:

Too bad you can't come to my party, since I planned it for weeks and spent two days cooking. What a pal.
