Bending about or bending around an axis?

    Betreff

Bending about or bending around an axis?

    [Phys.][Präposition]
    Quellen
Hallo Leute, es geht um ein Physikexperiment, bei dem Kunststoffteile um eine Achse gebogen werden.
    Uni-axial bending about the axis
    oder
    uni-axial bending around the axis?

"about" klingt für mich strange, aber ich möchte sichergehen, dass es nicht doch in diesem Kontext verwendet wird.
    Vielen Dank im Voraus!

"about" is fine for BE, IMO. It's used in AE, too, sometimes, but sounds quaint and old-fashioned.

For my BE ears "about" sounds odd; compare "wrapped around" (a pipe e.g.); one would not say "wrapped about". *

Dude's comments apply to "standing around/about" e.g. though I'd say.

    * but maybe I should say I'm not very "techy". :-)

Strangely enough, there are plenty of examples on google. I automatically thought they'd be BE speakers. :-)

Dude, adding site:UK to your search line produced 71 "real" hits; they mostly seem to have a engineering mathematical context; so maybe...

Have just noticed Google changes Dude's ...com link to Google .de in my machine; just wonder how that might affect the search results?

Wird "about" nicht nur bei einer Bewegung benutzt, so wie "move about"?
    #7Verfasser whynotme (913760) 23 Sep. 14, 16:09
    VorschlagCorrect but a bit odd...

Thanks for the input. I did some research, too, and it seems that "about" is acutally used quite a lot in scientific papers, while it stills sounds a bit odd or, as you said, quaint.

    #7: And bending isn't a movement?

About is absolutely OK in this context.

"where the curb starts to bend around the corner" is normal, but
"where the curb starts to bend about the corner"
sounds odd to me - never mind. :-)

#10: that's because it is odd! I wouldn't use it there, either. In a technical context, however...

bend about seems correct to me in this context

for instance: bend about two axis / bend about two planes etc.

Re #7: Wird "about" nicht nur bei einer Bewegung benutzt,...? - Nein, nicht immer. Es ginge beispielsweise auch "standing about": oder "sitting about," z.B.
