Do you think this means that the clear space (unburned paper) is measured (and provides NON-sunshine time), rather than the distance centre-to-centre?
But this happens with weak bzw. long traces anyway, I think - so what's the diff.?
Maybe it's just to warn the user not to regard those 'holes' as equiv. to points and measure centre-to-centre, which would be wrong (overestimating
the non-sunshine time)? (Because just before that, it says that 'even the faintest trace (browning) has to be taken into account' = sunshine time.
