sagte man in diesem Fall für die Zuschauer eher: viewer oder audience?

Mein Bauchgefühl sagt mir, das man audience eher in bezug auf Bühne / Film ect. nimmt?

    spectator(s)

television and movies are viewed, and audiences can be found at all kinds of different performances: theater, circus, book readings, etc.

Surely there are several choices, starting with just the fans, which would probably be close enough in many contexts. For those in the stadium you could also say the crowd or the spectators, or for those watching the game on TV, the viewers, or (more formal/technical) the viewing audience.

With a complete example sentence, it might be easier to say which sounds better in a particular context.

But a fan is not necessarily a Zuschauer. I'm a Clippers fan, for instance, and have hardly seen any of their games this season, for a number of reasons. :-)

Edit: plus, one is usually a fan of a certain team. When that team plays, it tends to play other teams that the true fan often hates. But in order to watch the favorite team, the fan also has to watch the team he's most definitely not a fan of. :-)

More to the point, a Zuschauer is not necessarily a fan of either team! Think corporate entertainment...
I'd go with "spectator(s)" for people actually at the ground.
