    x-rated

    Kommentar
I've just read in an old discussion that "x-rated" is obsolete and that there are currently other ratings in both the UK and the US being used.

How about colloquially? Is it still the first choice to describe adult content?

Yes. X-rated means "adult content", with a partly very fine boundary to "XXX-rated" in common language.

I think he means x-rated is adult only, xxx-rated for people with particular tastes, shall we say

"xxx" would be more or less hyperbole, to my mind.

The other common terms are "porn" (or "pr0n") and "NSFW." Or even just "adult."

I agree with @dude that "xxx" would usually simply be an advertising ploy to say that a given film, video or whatever is really, really, really "good and dirty" and so should not be missed;-)

...and x-rated is certainly not outdated, at least not here in the U.S. In fact, it has become a rather general term, also in speech, as a shorthand way to say that something -anything- is explicit in a sexual way. Which in the notoriously prudish U.S. sometimes doesn't mean much more than "Beware: Genitals are visible or mentioned".
In and of itself it can have either a positive or a negative connotation depending upon context.

#6 The "obsolete" was not referring to the use of "x-rated" in language (or rather I was inquiring about the use) but to the fact that officially films are not x-rated anymore, but a different rating system is being used.
