This is something about which I have had long debates. We need more information. Advice, counselling and consultation are all possible, but only partly interchangeable.

In the context of pregnancy and pregnancy conflicts, which was the occasion for my long debates, there seems to be a consensus that counselling is psychological, while advice is concerned more with nuts and bolts (doctor's appointments, employment rights etc.). Only consultation is a countable noun, and so you can talk about a consultation or a number of consultations. That's all in the medical field. If we're talking lawyers, then different considerations apply.

I agree with escoville, and we're talking about counselling in a non-legal setting. However, for an information leaflet, I need to say that we keep a dossier "für jede Beratung", i.e. for each person who comes to counselling sessions. Of course I could say it that way, but that's way too long for the limited space i have.

So would consultation work, or is there a better way?

Do you need American English, or British? I think in AE, "file" would sound better than "dossier."

I agree with #6 and 8, "client" or "case" would probably serve your purpose. From #3, I assume it's about providing information on data privacy.

I'd say that applies to BE as well. If anything, "dossier" sounds political.

I also agree with #10 on "for".
