Hi Selkie , slightly O/T. Your statistics are right. But I have the feeling I'm living in the wrong part of the U.S. Driving and walking in the parking lot of my local market can be damn hazardous to one's health. Why? Of course all those women riding around in the biggest SUV's.

Alas, it is just an evil rumour. The worst drivers are males under the age of 40, accident statistics confirm this. Very closely followed by stupid women who take their stupid kids in stupid 4x4s (to you Yanks: SUVs) to school and clog up the roads whilst decent people are trying to get to work. What is wrong with letting kids walk and cycle to school? The alleged perceived, but non-existent "danger" to the kids is caused by the stupid people in their stupid 4x4s. How can kids learn to cope with life's dangers if they do not learn to walk (hey mothers: that's what your stupid kids' legs and feet are for!) or cycle? And what's even better: They will be healthier, fitter and happier, and therefore cost the National Health Service a lot less money, which can then be spent on really ill people (e.g. those that were run down by stupid mums in their stupid 4x4s).

End of moan. Gosh I feel better now!

That is what men used to say in 60s and 70s sitcoms when it was fashionable to bemoan women's supposed incompetence in anything technical apart from brewing coffee (!).
Obviously, enough men have been smacked over (or run over) for making such defamatory utterances and prefer to remain silent on the issue (which they invented anyway.) Another reason might be the insurance statistics mentioned by Selkie and hein mück.

my impression is that driving a SUV or whatever monster car is either per se a sign of a character inclined to wilful bad behaviour on the streets, or it simply _brings_ the driver, females and males alike, to behave badly, ignore rules (parking in particular !), and in general menace other participants by the sheer mass of their tank vehicle.

Perhaps it is exactly that effect - those big sheet metal heaps being like a castle moving around, giving a fake safety feeling to its inhabitants...

@ Mary SUV stands for Sports Utility Vehicle, or so I've been told. Terribly sporty really, driving a thing that uses 12 litres of petrol to the mile 3 blocks to go shopping ;-)

Hi Mary, SUV = sport utility vehicle, loved by drivers of the female persuation. The farthest they get to drive off-road is when thay hit the neibor's front lawn.

Wow, thanks for all the explanations there. But why (Helmi) do drivers of the female persuasion (in the US only?) prefer these vehicles? Personally - if I could drive - I would prefer a cute little pink or purple car that can be easily parked and which doesn't ladder my stockings ;-).

BTW women drivers are only a danger to female pedestrians on zebra crossings (they don't stop because they want to eliminate the competition.)

Schoolgirls are also quite dangerous drivers, in my experience.

@ Mary , Beats the heck out of me. But I think women have this misguided feeling of safety with a ton of steel around them. Not so. You should see the chaos they create in the winter here. Why? Because they simply cannot handle these monsters.

Fast zehn Jahre lang habe ich auf dem täglichen Schulweg eine kleine Straße in der Innenstadt überquert, in der Tempo 30 galt und 60 praktiziert wurde - es kam also immer ein Auto, sobald ich einen Fuß auf den Zebrastreifen (!) setzte. Ich lernte, schnell durch die spiegelnden Winschutzscheiben zu spähen, ob ich es mit einem männlichen oder weiblichen Fahrer zu tun hatte. Bei Männern wußte ich, sie würden bremsen. Frauen bremsten immer verzögert und gaben oft auch noch Gas - ich fasse es bis heute nicht! - so daß ich zurückspringen mußte, um nicht angefahren zu werden. Ob Deine Erklärung hier zutrifft, weiß ich nicht - [Pathos] aber die Erfahrung selbst war eine für's Leben. [/Pathos]

Nur als Ergänzung: ich kenne den Spruch auch als "Frau am Steuer - das wird teuer". Kann aber sein, dass diese Variante nicht so verbreitet ist. (Und natürlich stimmt er nicht, egal in welcher Variante...)

Amanita, ich finde Dein posting gar nicht so OT, wenn man den Spruch so versteht: sobald eine Frau am Steuer sitzt, wird sie zum Ungeheuer. (Allerdings hab' ich persönlich diese Erfahrung bisher nicht gemacht, habe sowohl Männer als auch Frauen freundlich oder aggressiv im Straßenverkehr erlebt.)

Noch eine Sache, der Vollständigkeit halber. Ich habe den Spruch noch nie vorher schriftlich fixiert gesehen. Man könnte es ja auch "Frau am Steuer - ungeheuer!" (ungeheuer = altmodisch, verkürzt von 'ungeheuerlich'), dann ginge es nicht um die Tatsache, _wie_ Frauen autofahren, sondern dass sie es überhaupt tun.

@Amanita [only slightly off topic, really]: Diese Regel wird spätestens dann bestätigt, wenn frau im Minirock den Fuß auf den Zebrastreifen setzt. Die Männer bremsen vor allem deshalb, weil sie was zum Anschauen haben (nehme ich einmal an), die Frauen geben dann Gas (trifft voll und ganz zu!), weil sie vermutlich denken "Was glaubt die, wer sie ist? Der werd ich's einmal zeigen!".

Ob diese Autofahrerinnen aber als Fußgängerinnen am Zebrastreifen dasselbe erleben, sei dahingestellt.
