Your comment: Das könnte auf "picture" (Film bedeutend) wohl nicht zutreffen, obwohl es die identische Bedeutung haben kann, wie "pictures", also Film, falls ich recht verstanden hätte.
I'm not sure I follow your meaning here, but in any case I stand by my native speaker intuitions about how these expressions are actually used, which may not line up precisely with what you think is logical.
[addition:] "We're going to the movies tonight." = Wir gehen heute abend ins Kino. (from #8) -- that is also a correct usage, and it is another way to use the expression 'the movies.' But it doesn't contradict my comment about 'the movies' in #9.
