Ich denke, ich würde sowas schreiben wie

"We have always considered this to be something the media has to provide rather than something that has to be provided for them".

Wie gesagt, ich versteh den Sinn nicht ganz...

It stems from 'bringen' and from 'holen' . . .

Typically, the rent (for your humble flat) is a 'Bringschuld', meaning, its up to you, the tennant, to render the money . . .

A 'Holschuld', however, works the other way around: The one you owe the money to is the one who has to come and collect it . . .
