RaMell Ross is a photographer and filmmaker. His work is not an explicit response to Evans’s omission; it is a response to black lives in the American South. In 2018 his documentary film Hale County This Morning, This Eveningwas nominated for an Academy Award. It grew out of the images that make up his photographic series, South County, AL (a Hale County). These imagesmix the fluidity of cinema and the film still with the poise and precision for which Evans became so celebrated and influential.
With a family background in the military, Ross was born in Frankfurt, Germany, and moved between Indiana, Chicago, Maryland and Virginia, USA. In a recent interview forIndie Wire, Ross states: “Creating work that makes observations about race, specifically blackness, is what’s important to me; that is my starting point. So I think my calling is to make space for this truth to be less invisible, and for it to participate in the poetry of our world.”
