    I know I can say 'from left:' but are there alternatives, and do I have to use a colon?

    Various forms are used for captions:

    The members pictured are, from left: A, B, C, and D.
    From left to right: A, B, C, D.
    The members are (l. to r.) A, B, C, and D.

    A comma is often used as an alternative to the colon, but I think the colon does a better job of indicating the structure.
