My guess is that it’s ultimately derived from the same sense of “to pack” as in the quondam lesbian sense (above), namely M-W sense 6a and OED 9a.

Danke für den interessanten Link, Bion. Mit 'packer' als Bezeichnung für eine Lesbe, die potentiell 'packers' tragen könnte, bringst du ja noch einen weiteren Aspekt in's Spiel.

Nach Lesen des verlinkten Texts habe ich jetzt noch ein Verständnisproblem: Was bedeutet in dem Zusammrnhang denn "the lipsticks and the poodles"?

I can’t say much on those things. I notice Wikipedia and Urban Dictionary both have articles on “lipstick lesbian.”

My point was really just that I suspect the term “packer” at some stage got transferred from the wearer-packer to the thing worn.
