Ist "Ich checke (ständig) mein Handy ... " nicht auch im Deutschen gängig ?

Ja, @no me bré - "sein Handy checken" ist auf jeden Fall auch in D gängig. Aber ich habe mich gefragt, welche (anderen) Verben da im Englischen passen. Und ob "look at" dann im Sinne des "drauf gucken und Nachrichten lesen" komplett falsch ist.

re #2 - Just because "sein Handy checken" is correct German does not mean that the verb is idiomatic English. Wäre denn auch "Handy" im Englischen gängig? ;-)

#3, ganz richtig: "to look at" geht hier nicht. Das hieße: anschauen, angucken, betrachten, ...

"Look at my new mobile!" (geht). Aber das ist ja nicht deine Frage.

Bei "to watch" klänge es so, als würde dein Handy sich irgendwas ausdenken, sich bewegen usw. Nein, das geht also für deine Anfrage auch nicht.

Vielleicht kommt mal jemand noch und sagt noch andere Möglichkeiten im Englischen. Ich bin da überfragt.

I agree with #8, but also "checks"

... and also ... at least in AE, nowadays I think you would just say "phone", instead of specifying cell or mobile.

Add my voice to those who say that there is absolutely nothing wrong with "look" here. It works just as well as "check."

In fact, "check" can be just as ambiguous here as "look" can be. If you "check" your phone, you may also glance at it quickly for some reason without looking for messages etc.

I agree with #9, both in respect to "look" and "check" and in respect to saying "phone" instead of "mobile" or "cell-phone".
