Was bedeutet "Materialität" überhaupt im Deutschen? Geht nicht auch einfach "Material"? Oder "Materialeigenschaft"?

Yup – simply a pretentious way of saying "the materials used/deployed" (from a Leo who loves the new forum's ability to raise topics from the dead..... and Halloween's long gone!)

The problem with the use of 'materiality' as a translation of the German 'Materialität' (a usage that I am highly suspicious of anyway - can't find anyone to really tell me what they mean) is that the English word already has the meaning of 'relevance' or 'significance' as used by lawyers, for example. As in, 'His objection is not material to the matter in hand'. Hence the noun 'materiality'.

... avoids the possible ambivalence of "materiality" pointed out by rubywax, but "materiality" is defined by Webster's as "the state or quality of being material or physical" , which seems an applicable translation of at least one of the meanings of Materialität
