John F. Smith, Jr.: GM Chairman
John F. Smith, Jr., became chairman of the Board of Directors of General Motors Corporation in January 1996.
As chairman, Smith is responsible for building strong relationships with GM's various business partners, unions, dealers and governments around the world. He also works with external business groups and is a liaison between the board and management.
Smith served as chief executive officer from November 1992 to June 2000. He was president from April 1992 to October 1998, and president and chief operating officer from April 1992 to November 1992.
G. Richard Wagoner, Jr.: GM President and Chief Executive Officer
Rick Wagoner was named chairman-elect of General Motors on December 3, 2002. He will become chairman and chief executive officer on May 1, 2003, following the retirement of current GM Chairman, Jack Smith. Wagoner has been president and chief executive officer since June 2000. He has responsibility for the strategic and operational leadership of General Motors and is chairman of its Automotive Strategy Board. He also is a member of the boards of directors of General Motors and of the Hughes Electronics Corporation, a GM subsidiary.
