Früher hieß so ein Stadtteil "Schlafstadt".

Ich glaube, da ist etwas anderes gemeint. Eine Schlafstadt ist doch eher ein Stadtteil, meist eher peripher gelegen, der ein reines Wohngebiet ist, und tags wie nachts ziemlich unbelebt.
Der Speckgürtel, den ich ursprünglich nur im Zusammenhang mit Berlin kenne, ist die sich kreisförmig um die ganze Stadt erstreckende Stadtrandlage mit Einfamilienhäusern und Reihenhäusern, in denen diejenigen leben, die es sich leisten können. „Speckgürtel“ deshalb, weil dort der Speck sitzt, die „fetten Reichen“.

In Kopenhagen wird der Speckgürtel auch 'Whiskey Belt' genannt.

Wollte nur sagen das es "Suburban Sprawl" heisst, nicht urban. Affluent suburbs is a good definition and is a result of suburban sprawl.

Einen 'Speckgürtel' gibt es auch rund um Hamburg. Ist im Norden ein ziemlich geläufiger Ausdruck.

Affluent suburbs at least makes more sense in the context of my sentence anyway, where it talks about companies attracting lucrative work from Hamburg's Speckgürtel. Commuter belt wouldn't really make sense, whereas affluent suburbs are obv going to be a lucrative place for business.

My only objection to "suburbs" is that as far as I know, suburbs are part of the metropolitan area of a city, while "Speckgürtel" is not, necessarily, and can consist of individual towns or even small cities.

I think commuter belt works best.

Nothing wrong with "urban sprawl" - only, the formation of a Speckgürtel is not urban sprawl ("Zersiedelung") itself, but rather a phenomenon resulting from it, or one of its symptoms.

In American English, this is the most descriptive translation in common use. "Suburb" is OK, but "bedroom community" is instantly understood to be a nearby residential area many of whose residents work in the larger nearby city.

In London this is known as the stockbroker belt.
