    try LEO with 'hochstecken'

I understand that it's 'to put up' or 'to pin up' (her) hair

"Putting up" one's hair usually means putting curlers into it. What you are thinking of is called a "swept-up hairdo" (like a French twist, or a ballerina's bun, or pulling all the hair upwards to have curls on the top of your head).

I've got a dual edition (D) and (E), of the [Duden] 'Bildwörterbuch' in front of me. 1958, 1960 resp.

    It states:

das gelöste Haar -------------------------------- long, loose hair (shoulder length)
das aufgesteckte Haar: -------------------------- swept-back hair:
der Haarknoten (Knoten, Chignon ugs. Dutt); ---- the bun (knot, chignon)
die Zopffrisur (Hängezöpfe m) ------------------ the plaits (pigtails, braids)
die Kranzfrisur (Gretchenfrisur) ---------------- the chaplet hair-style:
    der Haarkranz; ---------------------------------- the chaplet of plaited hair;

Is this the answer to your Q ?

Hair pinned up on top of the head, possibly an elaborate style.

Normally you would just say, "I'm wearing my hair up" for the party.

Haven't you realized that I never claimed to be a hairdresser, Chrissy ?!?

And are you not aware of the fact that in fashion (clothes or hair or skirts or trousers or shoes or boots) everything is re-occuring?

(I guess you must be under [no, no not over 21 {nowadays over 18}] but under (!) 25 as you do not appear to have witnessed the re-occirence of annny style)

Have a nice 'Namenstag' on the 24th, anyway!

Oh Daddy, I'm so sorry. I know you were just trying to be helpful. But maybe you should leave playing around with hairdos to the girls.

    Danke für Deine versöhnlichen/verbindlichen Worte!

Perhaps it wasn't clear that I wasn't "playing around" but 'quoting'.

Anyway, as I'm going to bed in a minute or so, I guess I'll not only survive, but also recover!

See you girls next time! (same time, same salon)

A "Hochsteckfrisur" is normally much more elegant than that.

There's nothing particularly American about "beehive" in this context. It was my (BE) automatic reaction to the query. But the expression may be as dated as the style.

Let's hope Daddy is wrong and we don't get a beehive revival!

But Daddy, you did say that all things keep comin' 'round and 'round.
So I just meant, I hope you are not right about that, so that the beehive does not come 'round again.
