It may be that we are talking about the possibility (which still exists in parts of Germany) that you can have bulk waste (old sofas, fridges, etc.). collected instead of having to cart them around on your own.

In former times such collection was carried out on fixed, announced dates and everybody went ahead and put his things at the curb (great times for children - parents were happy to throw some stuff out and then son comes back, two old bikes and assorted crates in tow, proudly announcing that "these were in perfect condition" ...), but nowadays you have to apply for a date when your buld waste will be collected more or less individually.

I don't know if this helps, but in Germany, you usually phone your "Entsorgungsunternehmen" to set a date, then take your bulk waste out to the curb, where it is then picked up by them.

"Anmelden" is the right word in this context. Do you need to translate or did you just want to know how it works here?

In großen Städten wie z. B. Hamburg muß man den Sperrmüll beim Ordnungsamt anmelden. Man bekommt dann einen Termin, zu dem der Sperrmüll an die Straße gestellt werden kann und abgeholt wird. Auf dem Lande in Dörfern gibt es vierteljährliche, feste Abholtermine, an denen der Sperrmüll an die Straße gestellt werden kann (wenn man Sperrmüll hat).

Here in Hamburg you can take your bulk waste to the dump, but you can also ask for a truck to take it away from your place on a truck for a reasonable fee. That request is called "Sperrmüll anmelden".

@willi: Nur damit da nichts schief läuft. Man ruft in Hamburg nicht beim Ordnungsamt, sondern bei der Stadtreinigung an (040) 25 76 25 76. Dann bekommt man einen individuellen Termin, an dem der Sperrmüll aus der Wohnung geholt wird. Das Abstellen von Sperrmüll auf der Straße zur Abholung ist seit ca. 5 Jahren abgeschafft. Die Kosten betragen bis 8 Kubikmeter EUR 35,00 und die Wartezeit liegt zur Zeit bei über drei Wochen. Klar, so kurz nach Weihnachten ... :-)

I agree with "Bacon ausgestöpselt" & Co. That is the way it is done in Ludwigshafen am Rhein, although in Mannheim (just across the river) they still have 2 fixed dates a year. I've never come across this syytem in the UK.

Vielen Dank für den Hinweis. Ich wohne seit 15 Jahren nicht mehr in Hamburg. Ich bin nicht sicher, aber ich meine damals, vorm Umzug, mußte ich bei Ordnungsamt anrufen.

Um zur Verwirrung beizutragen: bei uns wird im ersten Halbjahr einmal Sperrmüll abgeholt (sowie Metall, Holz und Strauchschnitt, jeweils unabhängige Termine). Zusätzlich bekommt jeder Haushalt einen Satz Karten, mit denen man die Abholung dieser Stoffe im zweiten Halbjahr beantragen (anmelden) kann (oder man bringt die Sachen selbst zum Entsorgungshof, kostenfrei mit Karte).
Bei meinen Eltern hingegen gibt es sog. Hausratverwertungshöfe, beri denen man das Zeug ganzjährig kostenfrei abgeben kann. Ob es zusätzlich noch Sperrmüllabholung gibt, weiss ich nicht.

Over half the vehicles sold these days in America are trucks or SUVs, so it's rare someone can't take something themselves down to the dump, or ask a friend.

However for those cases where that's not possible, there are private companies to do this, in which case you would call them and make an appointment for them to pick it up. I didn't think about this when I first asked because it's so uncommon.

In diesem Zusammenhang könnte man auch mal das Wort "Sperrmüllgeier" in die Diskussion einführen (Bulk Waste Vultures?). Die sind nämlich der Hauptgrund für die geänderte Regelung. Zu den festen und veröffentlichten Sperrmüllzeiten zogen nämlich immer Heerscharen, meist aus Osteuropa, durch die Städte und hinterließen eine Spur der Verwüstung, indem sie den abgestellten Sperrmüll durchsuchten und selektiv mitnahmen.

In der zweiten Ausbaustufe kamen dann einige, die sich einfach nur vor den Sperrmüll setzten und ihn dann verkauften (!)

Das alles führte letztlich dazu, dass Sperrmüll nur auf Anmeldung abgeholt wird. Bei uns in Stuttgart übrigens umsonst.

In Australia, "Sperrmuell" is placed on the streets on special days. Its called hard rubbish. Perhaps it helps in your translation.

In Baltimore, we have a combination of the two systems. Each neighborhood has an assigned day each month when bulk trash will be picked up, however, you must call the city offices at least three days before your neighborhood's date and schedule the pickup of your item(s). You must also take your item(s) out to the curb. Normally, we would refer to this as "requesting bulk trash pickup" or "scheduling a bulk trash pickup." If you do not call in advance, your item will not be picked up, even if you haul it out to the curb.

I live in Los Angeles and whenever we have large trash we call a number and within a week a city truck comes by and picks it up - no charge. It's a service the city offers.
