@Bacon: No, to me 'marry in haste, repent at leisure' means if you do something in a hurry, you may regret it for a long time... therefore it makes sense to 'check things out' before entering into any 'long-term commitment' (as per the German saying).

PS: Isn't the German proverb you're alluding to: 'Jung gefreit, hat nie gereut' (i.e. rather more literal and with quite the opposite meaning)?

Well, perhaps you are right and I remembered the first version only for personal experience :-(
