Joseph P. Burke was named chief of Investigations and Intelligence on Dec. 30, 2005. Burke had served as deputy director of District 1 since Nov. 29, 2004, and as deputy director of the Parole Division since Aug. 18, 2003.
Burke retired from the Chicago Police Department after 30 years of service in law enforcement. During his career, he was assigned to the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), handling narcotics investigations; the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), assigned to the anti-terrorist task force; and the High-Intensity Drug Trafficking Area task force (HIDTA), specializing in investigations of drug-related homicides.
Burke received a bachelor's degree in criminal justice from the University of Illinois and a master of science degree in social/criminal justice from Lewis University.
