"Dad" jokes! LOL... "...trend-conscious people in public life" ??
hm - - us:
All I can say is, "Oh, Dad!" –groan- I don't know why on earth you turn your nose up at such an innocent and cute term. I hadn't heard it, but I find it nicely descriptive and even endearing.
Clearly it refers to the kind of jokes that a dad's internet-savvy kids find squeaky clean, worn out –or just plain out of touch with the times. For instance, telling a joke that involves visualizing hanging up a telephone receiver to kids who've never even used one would likely elicit the "Dad!" -response. Children embarrass all too easily for their parents' obviously dated humor.
For those who insist on stiff, elevated speech, you'd be the father who cannot seem to find himself clear of telling his offspring passé jokes. No matter what you call such attempts, the reaction is bound to be a groan and a pair of rolling eyes.
The concept of an older generation finding something amusing that its youth finds utterly inane or just plain square is certainly nothing unique to any epoch in human history. Maybe lighten up a bit? After all, it's kind of nice to hear a new term that doesn't sound downright lewd, don't you agree?
