    Seems somehow contradictory.

If it is "im Freien" then there is no roof, if it has Überdachung then it is not/no longer im Freien. Does it mean to build a roof/shelter for things that have been stored out in the open up to now?

    Yes, that's it.

Z.B. eine Markise ist auch eine Überdachung im Freien.

In Deinem Fall könnte man evtl. auch von einem Unterstand sprechen. Also, nur ein Dach, die Seiten sind offen.

I think your suggestion of shelter is the best approach here.

certain machinery needs a roof when it is used outdoors, to protect it from torrential rain or sunlight.
So maybe "roof for outdoor use"?

That sounds logical, but what does the German sentence actually mean? The document is a list of the person't targets for 2007. Does it mean that he plans to build such a shelter for the parts received??

It could almost be an advertisement for a car port.

Yes it seems to be like this. But listing different suppliers he might storage them in areas - under one roof.

agree with sly - the person is planning to build an outdoor (covered) shelter for building materials he receives from xy and z so that they aren't weathered by the elements (as they have been in the past, apparently)

OK. many thanks for confirming that. I guess I was unsure because the verb was lacking.

Can anyone guess what verb might be applicable to this item on this person's list of targets for 2007?

I'd have thought so too, but it seems a little odd that the person who plans things for a department doesn't apparently have an office yet.

Any shrewd ideas on this one?

Messmittelliste (Beschreibung des Lager- bzw. Einsatzortes)

Does this mean they want to draw up a list of the measuring equipment, should the list include (or be) a description of the store and/or place the equipment is used, or what?

Regarding the office of course, without knowing more, you can add all kind of verbs: anstreichen, aufräumen etc. make it wouldn't make much sense.
I guess he doesn't have his own office until know (shares one with another person).... ?!?

Messmittelliste = a list (survey) of all available measuring equipment, including information about their storage location and for what they're used.
