"aware" in this context means informed, whereas "self-conscious" means careful and suggests a level of insecurity or paranoia to me (but probably doesn't intend to suggest that).

"Self-conscious" ist mehr als nur 'sich Sorgen machen' und hat einen negativen Klang; es bedeutet so viel wie (uebertrieben) unsicher sein, ein verzerrtes und negatives Selbstbild haben und sich staendig selbst zu hinterfragen; wer sich noch an seine Teenagertage erinnert, weiss genau, was gemeint ist: ein unsicherer, pickliger 13-jaehriger Junge im Stimmbruch ist mit hoher Wahrscheinlichkeit sehr "self-conscious" (wahlweise ein zu dickes/zu duennes Maedchen).
"Self conscious" ist das genaue Gegenteil des deutschen "selbstbewusst" (also, sich quaelend seiner-selbst, bzw. seiner eigenen Unzulaenglichkeiten bewusst sein = ein extrem niedriges Selbstbewusstsein haben).

Google "self-conscious about" + health und Du findest eine ganze Reihe von Artikeln ala "self-conscious about my hairless body/small breasts/labia" etc.

"I am aware of my health" heisst so viel wie "Ich bin mir der Tatsache bewusst, dass ich gesund bin".

Keiner der beiden Ausdruecke heisst also "sich seiner Gesundheit bewusst sein", das waere "I am health-conscious"

I disagree. Your have translated 'I am aware that I am healthy', which is very different to being aware of one's health. To be aware could also mean that you are not healthy, but realise this.

Similarly

"I am self-conscious about my health" heisst also in etwa "Ich bin mit meiner Gesundheit unzufrieden / habe das Gefuehl, ungesund zu sein"

You could be very healthy, but insecure about this. Hypochondriacs, for instance.

@goon: hence, "Ich habe das Gefuehl ungesund zu sein", i.e. I am insecure about my health (just like a hypochondriac).

As for "I am aware of my health" - how about "Ich bin mir der Tasasche bewusst, dass ich gesund/ungesund bin" then? The point I was trying to make is that neither sentence means "I look after my health" (= "Ich bin gesundheitsbewusst"), which is what I suspected that sunny_star1 might have had in mind.

Self-conscious is about how you think OTHERS perceive you. You can be self-conscious about your looks, your speech, your hair-do. But being self-conscious about your health sounds very odd.

I think you are just very conscious - or aware - of your health, meaning you pay attention to what is going on with your body.

self-conscious is in the sense of gehemmt oder verlegen (see LEO)
how does this pertain to health? in fact, as suggested: he is very self-conscious about his bad teeth, BO, baldness, etc. (bewußt aber negatif belegt)

He is very aware that he has bad teeth, etc. - er ist sich dessen bewußt

the meaning of "self-conscious about health" would appear to be that given by Bill (US) in #9, i.e. conscious or aware of (your) health. There is no real suggestion of insecurity, dissatisfaction or the like.

However, this does conflict a bit with the way "self-conscious" is usually used, and I think "self-conscious about health" is a rather odd expression.

It is possible that self-conscious about health is a rather odd expression, but I found it in a survey, which I have to translate and therefore it is quite important that I choose the right translation, because without the right one the survey will generate wrong or bad results.

That you are conscious about your OWN health should be self-explanatory. However, you could be generally "health conscious" and feed the family healthily etc etc.

It is a fairly standard phrase.

Sorry, if it has been mentioned somewhere before and I am repeating. I admit to not reading every single word but I hadn't seen this mentioned yet :)

Also I am very self-conscious about my health würde bedeuten, dass ich mir sehr viele Gedanken über die nach außen hin wirkende Repräsentation meiner Gesundheit mache. Self-conscious kann dann so ähnlich verwendet werden wie "empflindliches Selbstbewusstsein" im Deutschen oder noch besser "kein Selbstbewusstsein." Natürlich ist I am very concerned about my health die richtige Übersetzung, wobei I am very self-conscious about my fitness vermutlich wieder (gerade so) gehen würde.
