    Dein Problem ist wahrscheinlich das "to render", das hier in der Bedeutung 4a(1), des Merriam-Webster gebraucht wird. Diese Bedeutung ist in LEO nur indirekt enthalten: to render impossible = unmöglich machen.

    It's also possible that anyone -- this writer included -- could pause over "dumb."

    It has two main meanings: 1) unable to speak; 2) stupid. Without knowing the context, I can't be sure, but I suspect "unable to speak" is intended.
