Ich feile noch an der richtigen Formulierung.

    Da ist was dran, Spinatwachtel

Indirekt wird nämlich auf die Ermordung des libanesiscen Premiers Hariri vor 2 Jahren durch den syrischen Geheimdienst Bezug genomen.

    Danke.

Spinatwachtel lässt wohl auf Bayern schließen? Dann grüaß di...

I'm an English native speaker, but I think the German speakers here have misunderstood the simplicity of headline. Syria is allegedly murdering parliamentarians in order to force the formation of a pro-Syrian majority: forming the new government by murdering members of the old ruling bloc.

Graeme, I didn't read the article, so you may well be right. But I still find it an odd way of putting things, especially since you have the much more common phrase of "Government by Decree", where G. stands not for the body, but the act of governing. I am used to the way things are shortened to extremes for British newspaper headlines, but this is a bit very short-hand and round the bend, isn't it?

In your interpretation of the headline, the German would have to be more along the lines of Regierungsbildung durch Mord, I think.

Regierungsbildung durch Mord might be better in German, I don't know. You are right to say that it is a play on English expressions like "government by decree", but as you also point out, in headlines, a lot of leeway is allowed. I'd say that the headline works in English despite the problem you point out because you could also say that Syria is governing or aims to govern Lebanon (allegedly) through a policy of murder. So there is a slight sliding of meanings, but no real semantic breakdown.
