nö, weil da hat es ja nen anderen sinn! es wird ja das nowadays betont... aber kann man ja ohne viel kontext nicht wissen ;-)

Das ist nicht richtig, dd. In deinem Beispiel setzt du focus und nowadays in Bezug zueinander. In mones Beispiel bezieht sich nowadays eher auf lives of the Irish people. Du veränderst also die Satzaussage, wenn auch in diesem Fall nicht gravierend.

mone, nowadays ist ebenso wenig Umgangssprache wie das Wort heutzutage im Deutschen.

I think nowadays is colloquial English, not slang. In formal writing I would no doubt use today instead. But I suspect that this word may be gaining acceptance there as well.

Warum nicht "today's Irish people"? Es geht ja wohl um die "moderne" irische Bevölkerung.

MikeAL, hier würde sich aber das "currently" auf das "influence" beziehen und m.E. andeuten, daß sich dieser Einfluß auch jederzeit wieder ändern kann. Oder lieg ich falsch?

Wenn es um die heutige/moderne irische Bevölkerung gehen sollte, finde ich meinen Vorschlag immer noch am schönsten, ich alter eingebildeter Sack ;-)

"There is also a focus on how immigration influences the present lives of Irish people"

das ganze sieht so aus, dass ich zuerst über die geschichtlichen geschehnisse der einwanderung schreibe und mich anschließend auf die einflüsse, die die immigration auf die irische bevölkerung HEUTE hat, beziehe
ich finde deswegen also today's irish people nicht so gut, @ bacon: sorry ;-)
und denke auch, dass today/nowadays schon am schluss stehen sollte?!
es geht da um eine facharbeit und mein korrekturleser gab zu nowadays folgenden kommentar: I am not sure “nowadays” is a legitimate word – more likely it is slang. I would change it to “today”.
deswegen bin ich mir ein bisschen unsicher - denn in der schule hatten wir nowadays schon immer verwendet - könnte aber sein, dass das nur im mündlichen war...

Der Unterschied liegt in der Betonung. Hinter dem ersten Satz erwartet wohl der Leser etwas wie einen Vergleich zwischen heutzutage und früher. Hinter dem zweiten Satz erwartet der Leser etwas über die Lebenslage des irischen Volks. (Joseph Williams, Style, Chicago University Press - sehr hilfreich und empfehlenswert zu diesem Thema)

In diesem Satz liegt die Betonung auf "nowadays". Als englischsprachiger Leser könnte ich dann erwarten einen Satz wie: One example of this is the number of small businesses and shops which have been opened over the past ten years by immigrants in cities such as Cork. Bezieht sich weiterhin auf "nowadays".

Bacon (de): nowadaysist eine adverbiale Bestimmung.

Aber, aber:
