'to pull the jalopy out of the codswallop' ? . . .

codswallop (Brit.) [sl.] = der Dreck [ugs.]
jalopy [sl.] = die Karre [ugs.] . . . ;-)))

I'd say.

Yeah this is an idiom, so what w said seems right.

For the literal version, one translation of Karre might be "beater".

(OT zu #2: Wie LEO zu der Meinung kommt, "codswallop" heißt "Dreck", grenzt auch ans Unverständliche. Ich dachte, es heiß immer nur "Quatsch", "Stuss".)

By the way, shouldn't the German by KarreN not Karre?
