Already in the Middle Ages, crimes were punished with methods like the cut off of limbs, what happened with the hand of a thief. Only rarely do we find such an approach to law enforcement today, although a similar theme continues to crop up repeatedly in current and probably in future talks, namely that of the death penalty. Though firmly rooted in society back then, a comparable version of it can only be found in the United States today. However, the question continues whether the death penalty is a suitable punishment.
This question is difficult to resolve because it is quite controversial, but I would like to define the following advantages and disadvantages of the implementation of the death penalty.
The first argument for the death penalty is the deterement. Supporter of the death penalty think we have to use the deterement of it, because we live in a time, in which you don´t have the heat to go across the street.
Therefore clear signals have to be set for our safety. Particularly child murderer and child abuser earn nothing else but death penalty. In addition they say that it might scare potential criminals into thinking twice before they murdered someone, but statistics show that the death penalty neither lowers or raises the incidence of violent crimes.
The next fact is that most of the criminals are terminally ill. They will commit those crimes over and over again, therefore locking them up and costly therapies, financed by the man in the street with his taxes, will not help. That can be a reason for people to be in favor of death penalty, because the costs of a lifelong stay in prison are much higher than the costs of an execution. But is it actually right to put a criminal to death just because it´s cheaper? The last point for the death penalty is that the murderers are kept away from the society so that they can inflict damage on somebody never again. Most criminals reoffent, and can not be integrated into society. Only the death penalty prevents the citizens from repeat offences of murderers.
But on the other side there are many aspects against death penalty.
First of all there´s the fact that you are not better than the person who killed someone, if you advocate death penalty. Moreover, people claim that you betake yourself with the murderer on the same stage, if you kill someone, who has killed an other human being. An other point is that you are not permitted to play god, because only god himself has the right of giving or taking a life. Even "The Ten Commandments" say "You should not kill!" That´s still topical for us as thousands of years ago. The last argument against the death penalty is that the human dignity is untouchable. That applies not only to Germany, but also worldwide. No human is allowed to deny a humane life of an other human being and we do not have the right to affirm a life as not livable.
In conclusion I´m against death penalty, because in my opinion the death penalty is not a suitable punishment, but rather a cold-blooded planned murder.
Furthermore there is a possibility of an error of justice, innocent people can be killed.
