In English we have the phrase "too much of a good thing." The whole proverb goes "too much of a good thing is no good."

Not sure if that's what you're getting at.

"That would be excessive" finde ich auch passend für Nicks Beispiel. Eigentlich noch besser als meinen Vorschlag.

My essay has to be written in a very good English and by no means in colloquial style. I like: too much of a good thing. But would you use it in an essay? Is it sophisticated English? I'd like to use it, because I love things that sound so idiomatic. :)

I really like that expression. It's just more interesting than to neutralise it by "to overdo/excess etc.. though sometimes you have to do it.
