noli hat natürlich recht. Vielleicht einfach:

" '...', I said, and looked him in the eye again."

I really like the solution with "meet", I just have to be sure that it doesn't imply any kind of staring if I say "I met his gaze again". It's important for my context.

How about: "I met his eyecontect again" or "I met his eyes again", would that work???

@ asdfjklö: nein. es ist nicht das erste mal. Ich hab in dem text vorher schon geschrieben "I avoided his eyes" (in dem selben gespraech natuerlich)
