    schwefligen Geschwafel

    Quellen
muss ich euch mit dem schwefligen Geschwafel eines
    alten Mannes belästigen

    From Harry Potter 1

Leo says that Geschwafel means gibberish, and this makes sense. But the best I can find for schwefligen is 'sulfurous' and this doesn't quite work.

I think I get the general meaning of the sentence, I am more interested to know if schwefligen Geschwafel is a common pairing in German and if there is a English version.

    Thanks very much

If you can tell me where exactly it says that (chapter and situation), I can look it up in the English HP. But it's not a common thing to say in German, in fact it doesn't make sense; it was chosen, I guess, because the words sound so similar (it's a nice, if made-up, phrase though, IMHO)

    Mein Gedanke :-)
Da können wir doch alle nachschauen, wenn du genauere Angaben machst :-)

Und: Ich finde das "schweflige Geschwafel" auch ausgesprochen gelungen - im Original wird da sicher etwas völlig anderes stehen.

Sure, it is on page 330 of the German edition. Right near the end of the book - maybe 5 or 6 pages before the last.

    Thanks for your help.

Thanks, but the German page is not really helpful for finding the English page. 'near the end' helps but you'll need to describe what's happening. Who's talking, where are they?

Dumbledore is talking. They are in the hall just about to announce the point totals of the year. (After Harry is in the hospital talking to Hagrid).
