Müsste es nicht heißen: Everybody is doing his/her own thing?

"Their" is often used in English to avoid the necessity for gendering.

Just found this article on the use of "they" for "he or she" and thought I'd post it for future reference.

molly, "make your own bed and lie in it" means something quite different, namely that whatever you have done, you have to take the consequences. Roughly: Die Suppe hast du dir selbst eingebrockt, also musst du sie auch wieder auslöffeln!

#6 kat - i think your suggestion misses the point here - i think the tenor this saying conveys that people are perhaps not ready (as yet) to proceed in a common fashion, perhaps to more effect - (perhaps even jealously?) guarding their own sphere of influence or perceived independence/individuality or whatever

your #1 suggestion is right: everybody is still doing their own thing

noli, das mit der Suppe war nur auf molly's "make your own bed and lie in it" bezogen, nicht als Übersetzungsvorschlag für "sein eigenes Süppchen kochen" gedacht. Sorry if I didn't make that clear.

perhaps you would be well advised to wear something like the Northland, shown here - http://www.funktionstextilien.de/content/view/383/ - integriertes Lawinenortungsgerät... (might become fashionable in these snowtastic times)

I'm beginning to seriously regret resurrecting this thread... I just wanted to add a helpful reference on a question that had been posed earlier, I had no intention of starting an avalanche... ;-)
