Naja, so einfach ist es nicht. Ich denke die Phrase durchaus schon einmal gelesen zu haben. Allerdings gibt google nur 87 Treffer aus, davon kein einziger aus dem UK. Für Deine beiden anderen Vorschläge finden sich exakt 2 bzw 0 Fundstellen ...

Noch was:
statt "in a good mood" kannst Du auch "in good spirits" sagen.

"lines" scheint also falsch oder zumidnest ungewöhnlich zu sein.
"letter" hingegen richtig.

"lines" ist nicht falsch, sondern eher altmodisch (in diesem Kontext), schliesslich wurde das Original ja von Theodor Fontane verfasst. Du musst wissen, ob Du es dann getreu uebersetzen musst oder ob Du "letter" verwenden kannst.
