Although customarily at the top of the page, running headlines can appear in the side margins or at the bottom of the page. The running headline may be the book or publication title, chapter or section title, or it may alternate. Often the page number is incorporated with the running headline.

it's also called "running head," for which LEO has "Lebender Kolumnentitel." Doesn't seem right, though.

"running head" sounds more to me like a toilet with plumbing issues....
