    In a discussion of the properties expropriated by Count Anton from the monasteries during the Reformation. The term cannot mean "laughing third," can it? Could this be an idiom?

    yes, it's an idiom, and no, I wouldn't use "laughing third."

    Maybe the "beneficiary" or the "winner," depending on your text.
