receive ist ganz falsch, das würde heißen, dass jemand anders die (s)ein Baby gibt. =)

Ich glaube 'receive a baby' wird mehr mit der Empfängnis in Verbindung gebracht, wenn überhaupt.

Irgendwie hab ich das mit dem "receive" auch im Hinterkopf, aber wahrscheinlich nur wegen dem deutschen Gebrauch von "Empfängnis"...

Eben, wenn's um die Geburt geht, ist der Vorschlag von Jimmy #1 richtig. Im Deutschen ist es beides Mal 'ein Baby bekommen'.

'To have a baby' refers both to the condition of being pregnant and to giving birth and the immediate (interpreted broadly) aftermath. 'To be with child' does not: it's only the first one of the above.

(to) have a baby = ein Baby bekommen. As explained above.
(to) CONceive = ein Baby 'empfangen'...im Sinne von Befruchtung.
(to) receive a baby via mail = ein Baby per Post erhalten... ;)

All I'm trying to say is that "ein Baby bekommen," or "having a baby," is a very inexact phrasing of a condition that can be interpreted widely. Accordingly, there are, as Richard has now pointed out, various ways of expressing this, depending on the precise condition meant.

And can you download one by email, or does it take too long? Even with broadband, 9 months is a pain in the whatsit.

..or if you play baby football, there must be the position of baby reciever. Then when the baby is passed, they could recieve it.

But seriously: She's having a baby refers to the whole process as Richard pointed out. He also had a number of additional suggestions, all of which are a bit more formal.

I left out the precise moment of giving birth, which could also be described as 'having a baby' (Quick, call the husband and tell him his wife is having the baby now"), similarly 'having the baby' could refer to the decision to go through with the pregnancy (as suggested by Madonna in 'Papa don't preach'- "I made up my mind, I'm having my baby"...).

Neither do I agree that 'to have a baby' does actually refer to the (immediate) aftermath (although I love the use of the word 'aftermath' in this context :)). After the birth has taken place, she's had the baby.

To be with child sounds somewhat dated, even to me- and I quite like antiquated language.

Someone ordering a baby by mail order is said to be getting a baby - getting, not gets. Its a whole process, not an instant occurrence.
Similarly for receiving.
