i'm not sure how to put it in german, but what it exactly means is it's a recovery where the economy hit bottom and from that point onwards the economy went up. this is contrasted with a w shaped recovery (also a double dip) where the economy starts to recover than it relapses back into recession

Ich dachte, unter einer v-förmigen Erholung würde der Leser vielleicht nicht gleich verstehen, worum es geht. Ist dieser Begriff geläufig in der deutschen Sprache? Ich muss gestehen, ich habe erst vor Kurzem davon gehört.

You can translate it as if it said "a steady, rapid recovery." It isn't really the recovery that is v-shaped -- it's the recession and the recovery together.

A V-shaped recession is a short one; the market hits bottom and recovers right away; there's also a U-shaped recession where the recovery takes a bit longer, and an L-shaped recession, where the market stays bottomed-out for quite a long time.

Not forgetting the W-shaped, or double-dip, recession, which is what the markets are actually worried about.

Has anyone ever identified whether there's a German term that refers to the letter of the alphabet or the shape of the graph for either one of these? And can you use a standard translation for either recession or recovery, or does the German need to be something that covers both instead, like Konjunkturverlauf?

I didn't come across much in the archive, but these terms are constantly in the news, so it might even be worth suggesting a New Entry if the German speakers can identify the most typical translation(s).

@#11: Im Deutschen muss man das beschreiben. Die Terminolgie "v-förmig" etc. würde vielleicht nach einigem Nachdenken verstanden, aber sie ist nicht üblich.

seem to be reasonably common in the German financial press.
