Star Wars: Episode I – Die dunkle Bedrohung ist ein US-amerikanischer Science-Fiction-Film aus dem Jahr 1999 und der erste Teil der Prequel-Trilogie, die die Vorgeschichte der berühmten Star-Wars-Filme (1977–1983) erzählt. Die weiteren Filme sind Star Wars: Episode II – Angriff der Klonkrieger (2002) und Star Wars: Episode III – Die Rache der Sith (2005).

genau, ich wollt wissen warum das "phantom" als "dunkel" übersetzt wird, da ich nur die Bedeutung "Erscheinung" kenne.

Sonst könnte mans ja eher als "die scheinbare Bedrohung" übersetzen oder?

Nach meiner Beobachtung wird in Deutschland mehr und mehr entweder einfach der Originaltitel übernommen oder relativ nahe am Original übersetzt. Aber in manchen Fällen klingt das Ergebnis nicht gut oder es führt zu ungewollten Doppelbedeutungen oder Assoziationen. Da wird man dann kreativ.

@4: In the movie, "phantom" does not refer to something that merely seems like a menace. It is a genuine menace/threat to the Republic, but it hides in the shadows so that it is not recognized as a menace, nor is it even clearly seen. The Jedi, who are supposed to be able to sense manipulations in the Force, miss it until it is too late. Senator Palpatine manages to keep all of his machinations secret from everyone. So the Phantom Menace isn't "scheinbar" but real; it is just shadowy and without any recognizable form or substance - thus impossible to combat effectively.

@5: I have often wondered about choices in translating movie titles. Sometimes they make sense to me, but sometimes they seem really strange. (I recognize that sometimes the English title relies on cultural knowledge not readily available to people in non-English, or even non-US, settings.) Thanks for the link, many of the titles on the list illustrate what causes me to scratch my head.

Slightly OT: When I was growing up, I enjoyed reading "The Phantom" in the comics. It was set in an unnamed African colony. The Phantom upheld right and justice dressed in purple tights and mask, coming and going without being seen. Only a very few people knew who he really was. He was like a ghost, in fact the locals called him "The Ghost Who Walks".

Other translations for Phantom are "Geist" and "Gespenst". A phantom is notoriously hard to deal with, being able to take corporeal form to attack you but becoming ethereal and fading into the shadows when attacked. That's what lena should think of when considering "The Phantom Menace". So, I guess "Die dunkle Bedrohung" isn't too far off.

So, the German dudes coming up with the German movie title did a somewhat reasonable job, I guess.

What I also suspect is, that Lucas probably took his inspiration from the same source as you!

Especially if you look at the first three 'sequels' from the 70's, they are borrowing not from just something, but from pretty much everything around at that time. And - to pay Lucas his dues - in a quite brilliant way (methinks).

Lucas took inspiration from a lot of sources. One of his key inspirations was the western. In many ways "Star Wars" is simply a western set in space. But there were far more influences than just that. I'm sure the old comics were also sources: Terry and the Pirates, The Phantom, Prince Valiant, etc., etc.

And yes, I agree, he did it brilliantly.

Eher war es doch früher so, dass Wenzel/Lüdecke und Konsorten auf Witzkommraus gekalauert haben ... so wurde aus "Smokey and the Bandit II", einem mäßigen Filmchen mit Burt Reynolds Das ausgekochte Schlitzohr ist wieder auf Achse

OT: Robert, did you see 'Inglorious Basterds'? Den deutschen Übersetzern ist zu diesem Titel offenbar nichts Besseres eingefallen, but talking about (spaghetti) westerns (and Star Wars)! And WernR - Check out 'Kindheit und Jugend' - das schließt den Kreis zu Smokey and the Bandit ...
