Finally a German saying that is shorter than the English version =)

The original poster's suggestion is really much better, since this one is really not 'He who,' because it's not that antique, so the version made up for #1 is not the original. There are a few proverbs where the old-fashioned sexist form is still more common, but this isn't one of them that I've ever heard.

For things to sound proverb-like, shorter is usually better, so I might vote slightly for should shower, should take a shower, over should take their shower, but they're all okay.

Aber, wenn ich schonmal dabei bin, es gibt ja noch ne Abwandlung... "Wer im Glashaus sitzt, sollte nicht mit Schweinen werfen". Gibt es von diesem Sätzchen auf Englisch auch irgendwelche halbwegs bekannten Abwandlungen?

That is, the normal form is 'People who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.' I don't know if you could call it original, since it's not really a quotation as much as just a saying as far as I know, but that's the only version I'm familiar with.

I don't think there's anything as funny as Schweinen that both (a) means pigs and (b) is close enough to be a pun on 'stones.'

'Basement' is better; 'downstairs' could just be the ground floor as opposed to the 2nd floor (AE).

I think there is actually a pun, or rather a spoonerism, with 'stow thrones.' But it might require a more elaborate setup to make it funny. (-:

Back on topic: I support, "People who live in glass houses should shower in the basement/cellar." It is the pithiest version, which is important in proverb-like utterances. Although there is a difference between a basement and a cellar, I don't think it is significant for the saying, and the soft "c" adds another sibilant, and alliteration is also a common feature of such sayings.
