not very polite (a bureaucrat or so-so customer service employee):

May I help the next person in line?

Note that the polite responses have the tone of a question, not a command.

These are more typical where there are several clerks at numbered windows, all serving one line, like at a ticket office, or where there's a sudden cluster of customers, like at a bakery or deli counter.

At the doctor's office, patients usually give their name at the desk when they arrive, and a nurse calls them by name in order from a list.
