What is food preservation ?
Food preservation is necessary to extending the shelf life but to keep its freshest taste. Food preservation avoids the growth of unwanted micro organism. The main objective is to provide the health of the customer. Food preservation is not really healthy, the least harmful method is canning. But it depends on the method how big the damage is.
Types of food preservation
There are various types of food preservation. A very old method is smoking, you heat and burn the food to preserve food, but this method can cause cancer. Another famous method is called
Freezing or deep Freezing, you slow down the temperature and stop when water is frozen., Back to the history the first refrigerator was built in the 18 century, just for information. Advantage: prevents microbial growth disadvantage: loss of vitamin B,C
In my opinion Canning is the least harmful method to preserve food, Food is closed in a container, this can be a glass, a container or a bottle. You have to have a good knowledge about sterilization to do this method. You can preserve food for several years, but it depends on the method. Advantage: Destroys microorganism, Disadvantage: Vitamins
Drying is the easiest way to preserve food, you just need the sun or an oven. This method can cause loss of color and loss of flavor. Advantage: concentrated form of food, disadvantage: loss of nutrients, vitamins
Another type of food preservation is a chemical process, with the help of sorbic and benzoic you can create syrups, salads, jellies or cakes, advantage: prevent microbial growth, disadvantage: people are sensitive
Nobody knows which the least harmful method is, but we try to keep the loss of vitamins to a minimum, it depends on the method.
So far I have been talking about the more traditional methods and probably healthier methods, as a 21 century person I see myself confronted with all these E-Numbers.
E-Numbers are also called as food additives or subsidies. They are nearly in all foods and drinks, but not all E-Numbers are bad for our health. Food additives are used in the production of food ( but subsidies can be also on a natural base). There are different groups of E-Numbers: E100 are colors, E 200 are acids, E 300 are regulators, and E 400 are stabilizers
Just for information I have some examples for E-Numbers:
E 100 is called Corumin you use it for soups and sauces
E 200 is called Sorbic Acid> you use it for drinks, frozen pizza and cakes
E 300 is called L-AsorbicY you use it for fruit juices, baked potatoes
But there are also E-Numbers without an E prefix for example Gelatine you can use it for jellies. Not all E-Numbers are healthy for our body, a lot of E-numbers can cause cancer or cause some allergic reactions.
For example the food additive E102 is linked to hyperactivity, children should avoid this subsidy> you can find this enumber in a lot of drinks, one example is Coca Cola
The E-Number E122 is also linked to hyperactivity> you can find it in a lot of yoghurts.
There is no scientivic evidence that the E-Numbers are harmful, the manufactors of the product argument that all products are healthy for our body. It’s a controversial issue, on the one hand everybody says that e-numbers are bad for our health, on the other hand producers say that they are not harmful.
Food additives are defined as any substances not normally consumed as a food on itself and not normally used a characteristic ingredient of food. Food additives are authorized on EU level for all 27 member states. Food additives may be only authorized if there is a technological need for their use, if they do not mislead the consumer. In Vienna the Ma 59 tests the food and take a look at its freshest taste.
Consumers should be informed of the food they eat. Food labeling is the perfect way to inform the consumers. The must contain the name of the product, the name and the address of products manufacture, weight, calories, serving sizes, food constituents for one serving, just for information 1 g fat relate to 9 calories. People should ingest 2000 calories per day.
European Food Safety Authority
The EFSA is the keystone for EUs risk assessment regarding food and food safety. It was set up 2002 because of the 1990s crises of food. It was created to improve EU food safety and to ensure a high level of consumer protection, this organization is an independent science based advice. They try to provide information on E-Numbers and food additives have guidelines for highgenic standards. They try to make people aware of obese, because people should be advised of what they eat.
Food provide us with the nutrients we need for healthy bodies If we overeat regularly we gain weight and if we continue overeat we become obese. You have the risk to be obese if your BMI is much higher than 30, a half of the US Americans are obese and 1 of 5 children is obese. Obesity is on the increase and has consequences for health, for example diabetes, high blood pressure. But obesity is also a politically issue, it puts an enormous pressure on countries health care system, they struggle to cover the health care costs more obese people means more costs. We live in a supersize me area . The costs can collapse and this has a negative impact on the active workforce in a country. Nurse facilities increase, people die earlier and parents outlive their children.
What can we do against obesity?
You should decrease the daily calori intake by 500 calories you will lose one pound per week. Furthermore a good diet plan and regular exercises are necessary. Organizations like Weight Watchers may help you to lose weight. Sascha Waletschek try to make young people aware of obesity, she makes a diet plan for obese people.
But also the famous cook Jamy Oliver tries to cook much healthier to help obese people to lose their weight. He also makes launches in schools to make young people aware of obesity.
There are also Child care Food Programs, food hygiene programs, camps for obese people and Afterschool Snack Programs to help obese people.
