Die Königskobra ist die längste Giftschlange der Welt. Trotz ihres Namens ist die Königskobra keine echte Kobra - sie ist mit anderen Gattungen, beispielsweise der Gattung Bungarus (Kraits) näher verwandt als mit echten Kobras.

Die Königskobra stammt aus der Familie der Giftnattern (Elapidae) und gehört als einzige Schlange zur Gattung der Ophiophagus. Ophiophagus heißt so viel wie schlangenfressend - da sie gerne andere Schlangenarten, auch giftige, verspeist. Ihr kompletter wissenschaftlicher Name lautet übrigens: Ophiophagus hannah.
Die Königskobra kann eine stattliche Länge von über 5,50 Metern erreichen. Im Durchschnitt misst ihre Art eine Länge von 3,50 bis 4,50 Meter, dabei werden die Männchen größer als die weiblichen Tiere. Andere Kobraarten erreichen eine Länge von 1,50 bis 2 Metern.
