    Warten wir mal auf die Äußerungen der englischsprachigen Muttersprachler. In einem Wörterbuch der Unterschiede zwischen BE und AE schreibt der AE-Verfasser jedenfalls, dass er den Ausdruck erstmals in London gehört und gelacht hat, weil er sich als Amerikaner darunter eher ein Gefährt im Flohzirkus vorstellte. Ich vermute deshalb, dass die Kennzeichnung BE richtig ist

    As far as I can see, wmw isn't querying the [Brit.] flag (and I doubt any native English speakers on LEO will dispute it either). The point under discussion is his suggestion of dustcart as a one-word variant to replace the two-word and hyphenated forms; he still has it marked as BE.

    I think that the two-word variant should be kept, as it will still be found in some texts. While I'm not sure that the hyphen was ever really a very popular option, it does appear in some older dictionaries.

    That said, I would certainly welcome the addition of the single word, as it is written these days, as the default form -- note the disappearance of the hyphen between the entries in Chambers 20th and 21st century dictionaries.

    Nachdrückliche Unterstützung für Mariannes Vorschlag #2. Das (in BE) (einst) gebräuchliche Kompositum fehlt nach wie vor in LEO.

    1) wäre mE eine Kennzeichnung als veraltend/dated o.ä. angebracht.


    2) sollte die alternative dt. Pluralform -wägen nicht fehlen, der entspr. Korrekturvorschlag Siehe auch: car - der Wagen Pl.: die Wagen ganz grundsätzlich umgesetzt werden.
