From Oxford Dictionaries Online:

BE Usage Note:
When ever is used for emphasis after how or why, it should be written as a separate word. Thus it is correct to write 'how ever did you manage?' rather than 'however did you manage?'.

AE Usage Note:
When ever is used as an intensifier after how, what, when, where, or why, it should be separated by a space. Thus, 'how ever did you find her?' could be rephrased, with no change of meaning, 'how did you ever find her?' This rule tends to be more often followed—or more widely understood—in Britain than in the US.

Most English dictionaries (including American Heritage, Oxford Online, Cambridge online) do not have an entry for whyever. I'm told that Webster's 2nd states for whyever: Properly why ever. The Collins entry lists word frequency of whyever as low.

The LEO entry Siehe Wörterbuch: whyever should be changed to 'why ever'. If 'whyever' is retained, it should be marked as informal or colloquial.
