... von der Kristallmorphologie ist das eindeutig Calcit. Und zwar in der Form, wie ihn die alten Mineralogen "Hundezahnspat" nannten. Kristallographisch ist das eine Kombination aus dem Skalenoeder mit aufgesetztem Rhomboeder.

Dogtooth spar is a speleothem found in limestone caves that consists of very large calcite crystals resembling dogs' teeth (hence the name). They form through mineral precipitation of water-borne calcite.

Spear-shaped crystals of calcite called dogtooth spar frequently line small pockets in the limestone rock. These crystals are a prominent feature of other caves in the Black Hills, most notably, Jewel Cave of Jewel Cave National Monument.

These crystals appear to be multiple grains making composite "dogteeth." Dolomite forms similar curved crystals, but the acid test shows this to be calcite.

Das halte ich nicht für angeraten. Beide Begriffe sind sicherlich nicht in aller Munde und wohl auch etwas angejahrt. Doch sind die Definitionen für beide Sprachseiten zweifellos übereinstimmend, finden sich einige aktuelle Verwendungen und besteht wohl keine Gefahr einer Fehlübersetzung.

Ein (nicht-falscher) Begriff, der möglicherweise nicht nachgefragt wird, schadet mE weniger als eine vorschnelle Löschung, die jede Chance vereitelt, dass künftig jemand, der die Übersetzung eines selteneren mineralogischen Terminus sucht, in LEO fündig wird (Das gilt z.B. in ähnlicher Weise für die Einträge sehr entlegener botanischer Species).

Irgendein Mineralogie-Kenner unterwegs?

Mir wäre wohler, wenn ein (veraltet) bzw. (selten?) dabei stünde.

Der engl. Begriff ist nur in alten muttersprachl. Quellen zu finden sowie einem Wörterbuch. Der Wikipedia-Eintrag ist nur sehr unzureichend belegt.

Irgendeine Warnung sollte doch hin, dass dieser Eintrag nicht 100%ig ist.

Ich lasse mich gerne von Mineralogen eines besseren belehren.

If the Dudley museum in Birmingham has a sample of dogtooth spar calcite crystals, the term is not veraltet.

And it's only selten because it is a technical description that is not on the lips of your average Joe Bloggs - in the same way that one may not immediately know what xeroderma pigmentosum or glioblastoma multiforme is.
