Perhaps more young people (and older ones for whom something like this is unfamiliar) should still read more things like poems and stories. Another context I thought of was Robin Hood, or King Arthur -- anything with knights and ladies in it written in old-fashioned language.

I'm sure you are right about that. But I do not apologize for making my comments, which were helpful emphasis, IMO--they certainly did no harm to anyone.

The OED2 lists three senses for which citations extend into the 19th century:

Well, actually LEO wouldn't, would it? We've discussed before that the good thing about an online dictionary is precisely that space is hardly an issue.

LEO actually contains a lot of specialist terminology in specialist fields, like engineering or patent law or medicine. Unless a term contains a word that also has a more common sense, you never even see it unless you search for it directly.

Old-fashioned or archaic language is another subtopic, and here LEO is certainly less complete than an unabridged monolingual dictionary. But when a word, like this one, is actually relatively common in very well-known sources, from the Bible to Shakespeare and Milton to Arthurian tales using a consciously archaic style, it's a gap in vocabulary knowledge not to know it, whether one is a native speaker or an advanced learner.

That is, if one has any interest in poetry, history, literature, liturgy, etc, If not, that's fine too -- those interested in engineering or medicine or botany or other things have their words in the dictionary, and we have ours. Precisely because LEO has essentially unlimited space, the larger picture isn't a zero-sum game where certain areas of knowledge compete against others, but rather one of expanding knowledge overall where we can all happily coexist. And learn new senses to some common words.

There is certainly room for words from all walks of life in LEO. The current contents of LEO is naturally somewhat reflective of the interests of groups of people who are avid users. As far as I can tell, some subject areas are definitely underrepresented, such as religion, art, and geography. I have tried to make some tiny contributions to improve that but it is hard to do without having in-depth knowledge of the respective fields.

It seems to me that the context -- namely, old-fashioned or poetic language -- is pretty evident if it's just clearly marked archaic / veraltet, as suggested from the beginning of this thread.

Yes, in some cases it might be more ideal if an exact synonym from a comparable time period in history could be found, but those don't always exist. (I thought 'würdig' might be worth considering, but since no one else seems to think so, never mind.)

There are certainly other words like that. What about, for example, 'die Base' meaning 'female cousin'? Should LEO have left that untranslated or unmentioned just because there isn't a contemporaneous English word, now archaic, with the same meaning? No, of course not -- what English speakers need is just the translation.

And for the purposes of a bilingual dictionary, it's probably less confusing just to give the basic meaning than to choose another word that's equally archaic. People translating entire historical texts might of course try to reflect some period flavor, but that's not easy to do. For a modern translator, trying to write in the German of Shakespeare's or Milton's day would be to a certain extent translating into a foreign language.

Anyway, I think the existing prioritization of new entries works pretty well, namely, that an entry that fills a gap and is supported by evidence can be added, unless someone else can show it's not correctly translated. That doesn't seem to be the case here, so hopefully we can all agree that the entry is worth adding.

Ah, meet and right so to do - hatte ich glatt übersehen. Wie schön, mir gefallen nun mal solche archaischen Relikte in unseren Sprachen.

Hm. Das Beispiel mit der Base überzeugt mich nicht so ganz, weil dies eine völlig eindeutige Übersetzung ist. Kein Mensch sagt mehr Base (jedenfalls in unserer Region), insofern kann man das ja ggf. mit "veraltet" kennzeichnen, aber es ist vollkommen klar, dass eine Cousine damit gemeint ist - und zwar in jedem denkbaren Zusammenhang.

Geläufig ist es in diesem Sinne noch in der Redensart "Das ist recht und billig"

... und es überlebt in 'etwas billigen'.
